One activity that makes Purdue unique and gives
it character is the fountain run. The fountain run is a Purdue tradition that
involves running through fountains located around the Memorial Mall. There are
five fountains on campus but a normal fountain run only includes four of them.
The four are the engineering fountain in the engineering mall, followed by a
quick run over to the lion head fountain outside of the Stanley Coulter
building for a drink. After a refreshing drink from the lion head fountain you
run over to the memorial fountain that is in the memorial mall near the grave
of John Purdue. This fountain is deeper than you would expect at first glance
so be careful if you jump in! Lastly you head over to Loeb Fountain near
Beering hall and conclude the run with the watery spray of summertime fun. The
last fountain on campus is the colorful fountain in Discovery Park. This fountain
is often left out of fountain runs because of how far away it is which makes
one continuous run through all the fountains rather difficult. The tradition of the fountain run
has been around at Purdue since the building of the engineering fountain in
1989 and ever since Boilermakers have celebrated finals ending, graduation, or
even just conquered boredom with a fountain run. Students, staff, alumni, and
even locals all enjoy this tradition and trying this before graduation is a
must for all Boilermakers.
