Selfie With the Neil Armstrong Statue

Here at Purdue University, where so many influential people have graduated, there is so much great history. There have been numerous famous politicians, engineers, businessmen, and so many more influential figures that have graduated from Purdue. One great name that stands out is Neil Armstrong. Neil Armstrong graduated from Purdue in 1955 with a bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering.  As you all know, he eventually became the first man to step foot on the moon which is obviously an amazing achievement. Throughout Purdue’s campus, you will find numerous statues commemorating important people and events. Right in front of the Neil Armstrong building is the Neil Armstrong statue, which was built on October 26, 2007. It is such a brilliant statue made of bronze and it sits 8 feet tall. In this day and age, with smart phones dominating the phone industry, a new term has developed. This term is know as the “selfie”. It isn’t uncommon to see a college student with one arm around Neil and the other hand taking a “selfie”. This can actually make a very cool picture and would make a very cool profile picture on Twitter or Facebook. This has been a common tradition for many newcomers to Purdue since the statues revealing in 2007. Who wouldn’t want a picture with one of America’s most influential figures in history? This is just another one of those fun, small traditions that Purdue has to offer, and I hope that all of you get the chance to take a selfie with Neil Armstrong!
